Dr. Hassan Bassiouni
Professor and Head of the Department of Rheumatology at Al-Azhar University
Dr. Hassan Bassiouni, born in 1955, is a Full Professor of Rheumatology at Al-Azhar University. He graduated from Ain Shams Medical School in 1978, followed by training at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath, England. He earned his Master’s degree in 1982 and his Doctorate in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation from Al-Azhar University in 1985. After a decade of continuous research, he became a Professor of Rheumatology in 1995, with a specialization in Osteoporosis following advanced training in Belgium.
In his role as a Full Professor, Dr. Bassiouni is responsible for ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and developing research protocols for junior doctors. His passion lies in clinical trials, and he has made significant contributions to advancing rheumatology through research and innovation. Additionally, he serves as the Secretary General of the Ethical Committee at Al-Azhar University, overseeing ethical standards in medical research.
Dr. Bassiouni is also an international speaker, having presented his work in countries such as Spain, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, the UAE, Italy, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, and Austria.
As the founding president of the Updated Rheumatology Foundation, Dr. Bassiouni is dedicated to promoting clinical research in rheumatology in Egypt. His greatest professional joy comes from seeing his patients improve, especially through the use of new drugs and techniques.
Outside of his medical career, Dr. Bassiouni is deeply passionate about art and classical music. He has a particular affinity for the Impressionist period and frequently visits art galleries. His favorite composers are Chopin and Beethoven, and he enjoys listening to the voice of the late French singer Dalida. In his free time, he enjoys snorkeling and jogging, activities that complement his well-rounded lifestyle.
