Dr. Mahmoud Afifi

Dr. Mahmoud Afifi is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the Research Institute of Ophthalmology, where he has served since July 2003. He has also been Head of the Refractive Unit since October 2010, reflecting his leadership in advanced vision correction and surgical innovation.
Dr. Afifi is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), the Egyptian Ophthalmological Society (EOS), and the Egyptian Society of Glaucoma (ESG). He is a regular participant and presenter at international ophthalmology conferences, particularly the annual ESCRS meetings.
He has extensive expertise in modern cataract microsurgery, including implantation of the latest intraocular lens (IOL) technologies such as acrylic, aspheric, toric, and multifocal (premium) IOLs. His advanced techniques allow many cataract patients with astigmatism to achieve clear vision after surgery without the need for glasses for both distance and near. Dr. Afifi is also highly experienced in complex cataract cases, including diabetic patients, narrow pupils, traumatic eyes, prostatic cataract patients, and pediatric cataracts.
In addition, Dr. Afifi specializes in refractive surgery, including LASIK, PRK for borderline corneas, and phakic intraocular lenses for patients with high myopia. He is also an expert in the management of keratoconus, offering state-of-the-art treatments such as intracorneal ring segments (ICRS), corneal cross-linking (CXL), toric IOLs, and advanced penetrating and lamellar corneal transplantation techniques designed to minimize postoperative medication and reduce the risk of rejection.
