Dr. Medhat Abd Elsalam

Dr. Medhat Abdelsalam graduated at the School of Medicine, CairoUniversity in 1979. Having finished the training year as a house officer, he worked as a resident of Ophthalmology while finishing his Master degree. He then joined the department of vitreoretinal surgery at the University of California under the supervision of Professor Alexander Irvine in San Francisco. Afterward, he got a fellowship at the University of Cologne in Germany under the supervision of Professor Klaus Heimann; the famous European vitreoretinal surgeon, where he could go in depth of this highly specialized field, enough to be able to transfer these techniques to Egypt. Coming back to Cairo, he was the first to do this operation –posterior vitrectomy- in Cairo University Hospitals. Dr. Medhat –thereafter- worked as director of the Ophthalmic Ultrasound Unit where he got enormous experience in this technique. Now, he works as a Professor of Ophthalmology at the National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences, Cairo University, where - in addition to his subspecialty in retina surgery-, he got vast experience in the vision correction surgeries; namely LASIK.
